About 13 miles (20 kilometres) away from Castelsardo, in the Santa Maria Coghinas area, following the Coghinas river, it is possible to reach the Casteldoria thermal springs. In a deep valley, between high walls of red rock and the intense green of the vegetation on Mounts Ruiu and Ortigiu in a place incomparable for the wilderness of its beauty called Li Caldani the fresh waters of the Coghinas river merge with hot bubbles of water, which have a temperature of 158°F (70°C), known for their great salty-bromo-iodic properties. In various places along the river, disquieting clouds of steam and muddy banks of black sand are found: they were used therapeutically by the inhabitants since ancient times.
It was the Romans to first exploit the curative properties of these Sardinian thermal waters; later on, in the XIII century, the Genoese Doria Family had a castle built on the hill (of which just a tower is now visible) with the purpose of protecting these useful springs.
Since the first years of the 20th century, after the construction of a pathway near a small fluvial bank, the SPA began to take shape (first a hotel, then a restaurant), which brought to the construction of treatment wards, in working order until the end of 1970. Then closed, the thermal baths were reopened at the end of 2010, after a deep process of enlargement, modernization and restructuring: the services they offer are now many, aimed at both health and beauty care (mud therapy, inhalations, thermal hydro-massage, SPA pool etc.).
